Seeds and cuttings I collect around North Carolina, what they turned out to be, and how to grow them for a NC Piedmont native-plant nursery.

Common statewide. The Piedmont plant is var. caroliniana. 2,256 iNat records across the nine central Piedmont counties, the most-recorded tree in the area.
Best bet: Sow the same season it is collected, or 90 days cold-moist at 41 °F. Seed does not keep past a year.
Common through the Piedmont in moist well-drained acid soil. Intolerant of wet or compacted ground. Very shade tolerant. Slow, and shallow surface roots dislike disturbance.

Hornbeam's trunk is fluted, smooth gray skin stretched over ropy longitudinal ridges, and it is a small understory tree. Beech is round, columnar and unfluted at any size. Hornbeam leaves are doubly serrate.
Mature hop-hornbeam bark shreds into thin vertical strips. There is no age at which beech bark breaks. Hop-hornbeam also sits on dry rocky slopes, not bottomland.
Chestnut teeth are coarse and drawn out into forward-curving bristles on a leaf 13–25 cm long. Beech teeth are small and blunt on a leaf 6–12 cm long. Chestnut burs are 2 in wide and stiffly spined.
Flip the leaf. Chinquapin is densely silvery-white woolly beneath with bristle-tipped teeth; Piedmont beech is only thinly white-fuzzy with blunt teeth. Chinquapin is a thicket shrub on dry ground and its bur holds one nut.
Elm leaf bases are conspicuously lopsided, one side attaching lower than the other, and the margin is doubly serrate. Beech bases are symmetrical and singly serrate. Elms fruit in early spring, not fall.
Magnolia bark is thin smooth light gray too, but its leaf margins are entire. A smooth pale trunk under untoothed leaves is a magnolia. In winter the encircling stipular scars settle it.
European beech leaves are wavy-margined with essentially no distinct teeth and only 4–9 vein pairs. American beech is clearly serrate with 9–14 pairs. Planted only here, so it is a town risk rather than a woods risk.
Buckeye has opposite palmately compound leaves and a smooth spineless capsule; its seed has a big pale round eye. **All parts are poisonous — aesculin and aescin, rated high severity.** Abundant in the same mesic bottomland, and it reaches you through the word chestnut.
Holly is the closest bark match in the Piedmont, light gray-white and smooth, in the same moist woods. It is a broadleaf evergreen with thick spine-margined leaves, so one look at the foliage ends it.
This is the easiest tree on my whole list to spot and the hardest one to actually collect from. Mesic lower slopes, ravine shoulders, the edges of stream bottoms. Not the dry oak-hickory ridge, and not standing water. Cook calls it a fairly common tree of rich bottomland forests and the counts back that up: 2,256 iNat records across the nine central Piedmont counties, more than any other species I looked at, and 14 in Person County where survey effort is thin.
The bark carries it from a hundred yards. Smooth uniform pale gray columns with no furrows, glowing against the dark bark of oak, hickory and tulip poplar, usually mottled with lichen. It stays that way at any size, which is the whole point of the character.
Second distance cue is the grove shape. Beech suckers hard off its surface roots, one measured stand carrying 700 to 900 root sprouts per acre, so an old tree is often ringed by a thicket of smaller stems that are all the same plant. A ring of small pale poles around one big pale pole is beech until proven otherwise.
Third is winter. Pale tan dead leaves held all season, strongest on saplings and low branches. A leafless January woods with a waist-high layer of glowing tan foliage is a beech sapling grove. Nothing else here does that with smooth gray stems.
Piedmont plants are var. caroliniana, white-fuzzy on the leaf underside. Var. grandifolia stays above about 1,050 m, so I will not meet it around Roxboro.
Leaf: alternate, simple, ovate, 6–12 cm long, on a very short 4–12 mm petiole so the blade sits close to the twig. Glossy dark green above, coarsely and singly serrate, base symmetrical. Count the veins — 9 to 14 pairs, straight, unbranched, evenly spaced, each one running out to a single tooth. That vein-to-tooth ladder is the character that closes out everything else.
Bud: 15–25 mm, narrow, sharp, shiny tan, shingled scales, standing well out from the twig at a wide angle. Virginia Tech calls them cigar-shaped and almost thorn-like, which is right. Twig slender, zigzag, with ringlike bud-scale scars girdling it at each year's growth, so I can count annual increments in winter.
Flower is spring business, March to May here, opening when the leaves are about a third grown and lasting roughly a week. Male flowers in small drooping globose heads on 1–2 in stalks, female in pairs on a stout peduncle. No petals, no scent, wind-pollinated. Not something to hunt on.
Fruit: a woody bur 15–25 mm with weak recurved prickles, splitting into four valves, holding 2 nuts and occasionally 3. Nut 15–20 mm, sharply three-angled, shiny brown. Southern populations have shorter softer spines than northern ones, so Piedmont burs are on the gentle end.
Beechdrops, Epifagus virginiana, is worth knowing. It parasitises beech roots and there are 520 records of it in the central Piedmont. If it is coming up at the base, the tree overhead is a beech.
Hornbeam is the one that costs a walk, and it costs it twice, because "blue beech" and "water beech" are both standard names for Carpinus caroliniana. Same smooth gray impression, same streambank bench, same marcescence. Run a hand around the trunk. Hornbeam is fluted into longitudinal muscle ridges; beech is round and stays round at three feet across. Backup is the leaf, doubly serrate on hornbeam against singly serrate on beech. Hop-hornbeam shreds its bark into thin vertical strips and lives on dry rocky slopes. Chestnut and chinquapin are the fall-nut confusion: both have coarse forward-curving bristle teeth on much longer leaves, and their burs are densely stiff-spined. Chinquapin is the sneakier of the two because its leaf is closer to beech proportions, so flip it and look for dense silvery wool rather than the thin fuzz on var. caroliniana. Elms are a leaf-photo error, settled by the lopsided leaf base. Umbrella magnolia has the same thin smooth gray pole in a ravine but untoothed leaves and stipular scars ringing the twig. European beech turns up in Roxboro yards and cemeteries, and its wavy nearly toothless margin with 4–9 vein pairs gives it away, which matters because a planted European tree is not a seed source I want.
The one to actually be careful with is painted buckeye, which is abundant here at 1,451 records in the same mesic bottomland. Its seed looks convincingly like a nut and the word "chestnut" leads people straight to it. Opposite palmately compound leaves and a smooth spineless capsule settle it, and the seed has a big pale round eye. All parts are poisonous, high severity.
Holly is the closest bark match of anything in the Piedmont, and the leaves end the question instantly.
Nuts ripen September to October. The burs split into four valves and drop, and Silvics is specific that seed fall begins after the first heavy frosts and finishes within a few weeks. So the collecting window is narrow and frost-triggered rather than calendar-fixed. Gather off the ground or by hand from low branches.
Expect a high share of empty nuts — FNA says they are often hollow even when full-sized, so pinch or float test before counting a haul. About 1,600 cleaned seeds per pound. Good mast crops come every 2 to 8 years, substantial seed production starts around age 40 and heavy production around 60, so a young sucker thicket produces nothing and I need a genuinely old tree.
Germination is epigeous and chilling is required. LBJ's number is 90 days at 41 °F. Seed is short-lived: most germinate the first year and then lose viability, so there is no storing it dry over a season. Sow on mineral soil or leaf litter, and keep it off excessively wet ground.
Given all that, seed is not the surest route. This species already regenerates mostly by suckering, and FEIS says outright that beech is more likely to develop by sprouting than by seedling establishment. Root cuttings or severed suckers lifted off a mother tree's surface roots follow what the plant does naturally. That needs landowner permission and it is a different kind of trip, but it is the route I would bet on.
One thing to watch and report. Beech leaf disease reached North Carolina in 2025, confirmed in Watauga County and published this month, the southernmost confirmation in North America. It arrived as a 200-mile jump, not a spreading front, so in the Piedmont it is a check-and-report character rather than an expected one. Look up into backlit lower canopy for dark interveinal banding parallel to the lateral veins, thickened and slightly raised. In winter check the marcescent leaves and the litter, which is exactly how the NC record was found. Report suspects to NCFS Forest Health and log it on iNaturalist. Regardless, do not move beech cuttings, litter or firewood between drainages.
Person County holds 14 iNat records, which reflects survey effort rather than scarcity, and beech is listed as common at every named site around here. Bottomland and mesic slopes at Mayo Lake and Hyco Lake, and the Hyco and Flat River drainages. Further out, Eno River State Park, Duke Forest, Occoneechee Mountain, the Haw near Saxapahaw, and the Uwharries.
Aim for the transition band: the lower third of a slope where it stops draining, or the shoulder above a creek bottom. On the flat wet ground itself I will find hornbeam and river birch instead, which is convenient, since those are the two I most want to compare it against.
