Seeds and cuttings I collect around North Carolina, what they turned out to be, and how to grow them for a NC Piedmont native-plant nursery.
Aralia spinosa · Araliaceae
A spiny club of a trunk carrying the biggest leaf in temperate North America, topped in late summer by a three-foot cloud of white flowers.

Native statewide in NC (Coastal Plain, Piedmont, Mountains) but "uncommon but widespread" — colonies, not a carpet. iNaturalist has only 2 Alamance County records against 40 in Orange and 31 in Durham, which reads as under-recording rather than absence, since this is exactly the disturbed riparian-edge habitat it wants
Best bet: Two parallel tracks. Seed, for genetic diversity: clean pulp off the same day (fermenting pulp kills viability fast), then fall-sow immediately, barely covered (under 5 mm), in flats left outside for the winter. Natural stratification is far more reliable than a short fridge chill for this seed. If it must be stored, cold-moist stratify 90+ days at ~37–41°F. Second track, the near-certain one: root cuttings or a dug sucker. The plant perennates by rhizomes and resprouts vigorously from any root fragment, so take 3-in dormant root cuttings in Dec–Feb, store upside down in damp sand, pot in Mar–Apr.
A Piedmont native squarely in range (USDA 4a–9b), takes heavy clay and urban soil, drought-tolerant once established, genuinely deer-resistant. The one real caution is the flip side of what makes it easy: it spreads aggressively by rhizome and root sucker and will build a thicket, so site it where a colony is the goal (a hedgerow, a back edge, a wildlife strip) and keep nursery stock in containers rather than field rows, since any root left behind after lifting becomes a new plant. Give it shelter from wind; those 4-ft leaves shred. Handle with gloves. Bark and roots cause contact dermatitis in some people and the raw berries are mildly toxic.

Leaves once-pinnate (7–19 leaflets, one branching order) and the bark carries fat corky pyramidal knobs with a spine on top, against Aralia's twice or thrice-compound leaf and simple triangular prickles straight off the bark. Backup: crush a Zanthoxylum leaflet and it smells sharply of citrus; chewing the bark numbs the tongue. Aralia does neither.
Both throw a big flat-ish white flower mass on a soft-wooded riverside shrub with dark purple fruit, and at fifty yards on the Haw they read the same. Elderberry's leaves are opposite and once-pinnate on completely smooth, spineless stems; run a hand down it and nothing bites. Aralia is alternate, twice-compound, and armed everywhere. Timing separates them too: elderberry fruits Jul–Aug and is finishing now, Aralia is only just blooming.
The one that actually fools the "purple-black berries on magenta stalks" impression, and it's on every Haw River edge in August. Pokeweed leaves are simple and entire, no leaflets at all, the stems are unarmed, and the berries hang in a drooping raceme, against Aralia's compound leaves, prickles, and berries in radiating umbels.
Spiny and pinnate, so it gets a look. Once-pinnate with rounded, entire (untoothed) leaflets and a pair of short stipular spines flanking each bud, against Aralia's twice-compound, sharply toothed leaflets and prickles scattered all over the stem and rachis. Locust also flowers in May with hanging white pea-flowers and makes flat brown pods.
Same colonial habit, same clubby stems, same big pinnate leaves in the same edge habitat. Sumac is unarmed, zero spines anywhere, its leaves are once-pinnate, and its fruit is a dense erect cone of fuzzy red drupes rather than a spreading umbel of purple-black ones. (Winged sumac adds a winged rachis between leaflets.)
Genuinely hard: also spiny, also huge and twice-compound, and it hybridizes with our native. Rare in NC (only ~14 iNat records statewide) but worth a check. Best seen while in bloom, which is now: A. spinosa's inflorescence is pyramidal with a long central axis, taller than wide, up to 3 ft; A. elata's is flat-topped and wider than tall, with no dominant central axis. Backup: flip a leaflet. A. spinosa is whitish-glaucous and nearly hairless beneath; A. elata is greener and downy, especially on the midrib and veins.
Same genus, same compound-leaf look, same dark drupes. It is a herbaceous perennial: soft green stems, no woody trunk, no spines, topping out around 3–5 ft and sprawling rather than standing as a pole. More a mountain-cove plant than a Haw River one.
Devil's walking stick is a pioneer of sunny gaps, and in the last week of August it's doing the loudest thing it does all year: a bare, spiny, mostly unbranched pole with a two-to-three-foot pyramid of cream-white flowers balanced on top, humming with bees and wasps. Scan the edges, where the Haw River Trail leaves the canopy for a powerline cut, an old roadbed, a blowdown gap, or the mowed shoulder above the floodplain. It's shade-intolerant and disappears as woods close over it, so the trail interior is wasted effort. The brushy seam between trail and river is where it lives.
Then walk up and read the leaf, because the leaf is the proof. Trace a leaf stalk back from a leaflet toward the stem and count the branch points: it forks, then forks again, sometimes a third time, and the whole structure is 2–5 feet long with a hundred or more leaflets. The largest leaf on any temperate North American tree, and nothing else on the Haw comes close. Trunk, petiole, and the rachis running out into the leaf itself are all set with stout triangular prickles.
Last piece is company. It spreads by rhizome, so a plant is usually a thicket of sibling poles, all clubby, all leafy only at the top. One colony found is a seed source for years.
Return-trip flag, worth reading before packing pruners. On an August 20 visit I'm almost certainly walking into flower, not fruit. NC iNaturalist records put flowering at its peak in August (19 flowering records against 5 fruiting) and fruiting at its peak in September, and USFS reports flowers in July–August with fruit ripening September–October. Expect cream umbels, pink rachis already coloring up, and hard green pea-sized drupes just setting. Green fruit is not collectible; the pyrenes aren't finished. So make this the scouting trip: find the colonies, drop a pin on each, note which get the most sun, and come back mid-September through October for seed.
When collecting, cut whole umbels off with pruners once the drupes are purple-black. Each berry carries 3–5 stony pyrenes. One useful nuance from the Wildflower Center: the true maturity signal is the nutlet rather than the pulp. Crush a drupe, and if the covering of the nutlet inside is hard and brittle, the seed is ripe, which can happen slightly before the pulp has fully darkened. Birds strip these fast once they blacken, so don't dawdle. The bare pink fruit stalks persist for months and will show that a colony fruited even after I've missed it.
Clean the same day. Macerate the pulp off in water and rinse to bare pyrenes; fermenting pulp will cook the seed. Plant or stratify immediately; do not let them dry on a windowsill.

Handling: gloves, always. The prickles are vicious and go in deep, and bark and roots cause contact dermatitis in some people. The raw berries are mildly toxic (araliin). Bird food, not forage.
Work the Haw River Trail land-trail sections around Saxapahaw, up and down river of the mill. Ignore the closed-canopy stretches and hunt the light gaps: the powerline cut where it crosses the corridor, old roadbeds and skid trails coming down to the river, the brushy shoulder where the mowed edge meets floodplain woods, and any recent blowdown letting sun to the ground. Riverbank scour and disturbed second growth along the Haw is exactly the pioneer habitat it wants.
County records are thin, only 2 Alamance observations on iNaturalist against 40 in Orange and 31 in Durham, but that gap is almost certainly under-recording rather than absence, since the species is native statewide and this is textbook habitat. A find here is worth documenting. If Saxapahaw comes up empty, the same edge-hunting works at Swepsonville River Park and Great Bend Park at Glencoe upstream, and the Orange/Durham colonies along the Eno are the nearest sure thing.
One practical note for this hike: I'm also hunting elderberry on this trail. They share the habitat and the two are separated by a single gesture. Run a hand down the stem. Smooth means elderberry. If it bites, it's the walking stick.
